So I played with GIMP a bit and...

It makes art too easy...

The white sphere is the Earth Spirit Gaia. This picture is a reenactment of the scene in Captain Planet where she gives the 5 Planeteers their rings Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, and Heart.

GIMP is incredibly complicating for me...all I know how to do is transparent backrounds...

I just randomly played with stuff till I got something. Heh...

It's a bunch of colorful exploding stars with weird neon lights shooting off of them. Kind'a hard to not make it bright... =/

I'm a little surprised to find that Black Star can do no more than I can in this photoshop knockoff.

There's no need to feel that way. You can do the same thing by simply looking at the filters menu and throwing some random brushes down. The first image in his post is created as such:

Filters
> Light and Shadow >> Supernova...

To get the line effects, simply use a brush. Change your brush to one of the three differently-sized X patterns to get the desired effect.

There we go.

You left off the lens flare and motion blurs. D;

Yay, update after the course of three months.

Anywho, got bored and drew a kind of exoskeleton gauntlet thing out of boredom due to my current inability to play MMOs and such.

I think it came out nicely.
